Terran Geotechnical Consultants Ltd. was involved with Eagle West Crane & Rigging and Arsenal Engineering to provide geotechnical service for the 2017 Dinner in the Sky event at the Mosquito Creek Marina. The site location, history, and surficial soils are interesting as it’s considered to belong to the Mission India Reserve, and was once located on the tidal zone, outside the shoreline, within the Burrard Inlet. Historically, the site location was used as a sawmill during the 20th century and has since been raised above grade using a mix of woody debris, dredging sand, and imported gravel fill. Geophysics survey indicated voids below ground. To determine the suitability of the site for raising the dinner guests and platforms using a mobile crane, Terran Geo conducted the necessary works to assess the quality of the fill. Historical study was completed to determine past land uses and estimate potential fill material types. We contracted Ontrack Drilling to complete several augerholes to sample and complete density testing within the fill. In addition, we completed a Benkelman Beam Test to measure the deflection within the gravel pavement along the entire surface where the cranes and platforms would be located. Our geotechnical work provided assurance the mobile cranes could be safely at the site to hoist the platforms and dinner guest. We are proudly mentioned on cranenetworknews.
